Insurance for Architects
Including Architect Professional Liability Insurance
In operating a professional architecture or design practice, you face many risks. Melendez Insurance specializes in easy, affordable insurance for independent architects and small to mid-sized architecture firms. We know the architecture industry and the risks you face.
Architects Need to Be Protected
As an architect, the buildings you design must meet client specifications and withstand the test of time. You strive for 100 percent perfection - but it only takes one miscalculation on your part to cause a client a costly delay during construction, or worse, a faulty design that could become a safety concern. If you get sued over an error in your work, get ready for a very costly battle, unless you have architect professional liability insurance.

Architects Insurance Options
Architect Professional Liability Insurance
Also known as "E&O" or "errors and omissions" insurance, architect professional liability insurance covers your business if one of your clients should allege that you caused them a financial loss.
For example, if a building is constructed to your specifications, but over time becomes subject to water and mold damage, your client could claim that a mistake you made in providing your professional services caused a financial loss. If you face a lawsuit—even if you don't think you're actually responsible for the loss—you have to pay for lawyers and take time out from work to battle the suit.
Architect General Liability Insurance
Unfortunately for every business owner, the chances of getting sued have dramatically increased. A general liability insurance policy that is designed for architects can prevent a legal suit from turning into a financial disaster by providing insurance protection in case your business is ever sued or held legally responsible for some injury or damage.
For example, a client accidentally trips on his way to review your designs. As a result of the fall, the client suffers a serious cut that requires stitches. General Liability insurance pays the high costs of a lawsuit or settlement, including defense expenses; bond payments; the income you lose while you're in court; and any judgments and settlements, including required interest and medical expenses for an injured party.
Workers Compensation Insurance for Architects
Workers Compensation Insurance is designed to help architecture companies pay benefits to employees who are injured on the job. In most states, you are required to carry Workers Compensation coverage. Even in non-mandatory states, it can be a very good idea, particularly if you have many employees, or if they are engaged in hazardous activities.
Inland Marine Insurance
Any architect who regularly moves expensive materials, equipment, or supplies from one job site to another job site should have some type of inland marine insurance. This way, in the event of an accident, the goods or materials being shipped are protected separately from your auto policy.
An umbrella insurance policy plugs holes in your existing coverage. It provides additional protection that kicks in when the primary architects insurance coverage has been exhausted.
